Further findings document complex interactions of IHI with various intracortical inhibitory circuits in the motor cortex ( Daskalakis et al., 2002 Chen et al., 2003). IHI is additionally modulated by various attributes of the motor output, such as the fineness of movements and contraction strength ( Perez and Cohen, 2008 Morishita et al., 2012 Kuo et al., 2017). Similar to the paired-pulse paradigms, stimulation of the ipsilateral M1 during voluntary movements attenuates the electromyographic (EMG) activity of the moving limb, termed the ipsilateral silent period (iSP) ( Ferbert et al., 1992 Cincotta and Ziemann, 2008 Giovannelli et al., 2009). The interstimulus interval (ISI) between the conditioning and test stimulus affects the strength of IHI ISIs of 3–5 ms can even produce facilitation of the MEPs ( Ferbert et al., 1992 Hanajima et al., 2001). A test stimulus following a conditioning stimulus of the contralateral hemisphere with a 6–15 ms delay results in depressed motor evoked potentials (MEPs) ( Ferbert et al., 1992 Di Lazzaro et al., 1999 Daskalakis et al., 2002). Interhemispheric inhibition has been directly demonstrated with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) using a paired-pulse paradigm. Evidence shows that the motor cortex recruits transcallosal networks that primarily evoke interhemispheric inhibition (IHI) in homologous regions of the contralateral motor cortex ( Ferbert et al., 1992 Cincotta and Ziemann, 2008 Hübers et al., 2008). Although limb movements are predominantly driven by the contralateral motor cortex, entirely unilateral movements elicit correlated activity in the ipsilateral hemisphere ( Tanji et al., 1988 Donchin et al., 1998 Cardoso et al., 2001). However, these studies often have limited timing of stimulation and examine one limb and the contralateral hemisphere in isolation. These results show that changes caused by CS to the functional coupling within and between precentral cortices is contingent on the timing of CS relative to movement.Ĭortical stimulation (CS) delivered during different phases of movement has been shown to affect motor function ( Pascual-Leone et al., 1992 Bütefisch et al., 2004 Thabit et al., 2010 Edwardson et al., 2015). Simultaneous LFP recordings from one animal revealed correlations between changes in interhemispheric alpha band coherence and changes in RT, suggesting that alpha activity may be indicative of interhemispheric communication. All other stimulus conditions as well as random stimulation and periodic stimulation did not have consistently significant effects on either limb. Stimulation delivered before ipsilateral limb movement decreased ipsilateral RT. In contrast, stimulation delivered after the end of contralateral movement increased contralateral RT but decreased ipsilateral RT. Stimulation delivered before contralateral limb movement onset shortened the contralateral limb RT. During a given session CS was delivered to one hemisphere with respect to movements of either the contralateral or ipsilateral limb. Three macaques were trained in a unimanual reaction time (RT) task and implanted with epidural or intracortical electrodes over bilateral motor cortices. We sought to bridge these two approaches by documenting the consequences of delivering CS to a single motor cortex during different phases of contralateral and ipsilateral limb movement, and simultaneously assessing changes in interactions within and between the hemispheres via local field potential (LFP) recordings. On the other hand, studies exploring interhemispheric interactions typically deliver CS at rest. However, previous studies that have investigated the effects of delivering CS during movement typically focus on a single hemisphere. Cortical stimulation (CS) of the motor cortex can cause excitability changes in both hemispheres, showing potential to be a technique for clinical rehabilitation of motor function. Therefore, solving the puzzle would take a minimum of 31 steps. So, if the tower had five discs, the formula would be 25-1, which is 31. In this formula, S is the number of steps, and N is the number of discs. Once he had done this, he was able to easily demonstrate that the challenge was impossible. He realised that the simplest way to approach the problem was to represent it as a graph, where lines (the bridges) connected four points (the banks and islands) in a way representative of the city’s actual layout. Euler’s challenge was to find a route through the city that involved crossing all seven of the city’s bridges exactly once. The four areas between the islands and the two sides of the city were connected by seven bridges. Königsberg was a Prussian city bisected by a river that contained two large islands. This mode of thinking originated when mathematician Leonhard Euler was tasked with the ‘Seven Bridges of Königsberg’ challenge in 1736. “Once you have represented the problem this way, you can spot connections to other problems you already know about.” “Many problems in discrete mathematics can be translated onto a graph, such as scenarios that involve flipping a switch or making a move in chess,” says Dan. Graphs uncover aspects of a particular scenario that might have otherwise gone unseen, in particular by connecting them to other scenarios that may be better understood. To visualise not only how many steps are needed, but exactly which steps too, the Tower of Hanoi configuration can be represented on a diagram that mathematicians call a graph. Using the formula above, we can deem that this is highly unlikely, given it would take them many billions of years to complete! Since this legend was invented by Lucas as a marketing ploy, it is hardly surprising that the underlying mathematics do not allow this apocalyptic prophecy to be put to the test. The legend goes that young priests of a Hindu temple were tasked with moving discs of pure gold according to the rules of the puzzle – except that their Tower contained not 5 but 64 discs, and it was said that when they completed the task, the world would end. Interestingly, this formula can lead us back to the Tower of Hanoi’s supposed mythological roots. If it had four discs, it would require only 15 steps – and for three discs, only 7. So, if the tower had five discs, the formula would be 2⁵-1, which is 31. This can be written in algebraic form: S = 2 N-1 The more discs that the puzzle contains, the more steps it will take – rising exponentially, in fact. Ultimately, it involves constructing and reconstructing progressively larger ‘towers’, until the bottom disc can be moved to the third pole and the rest of the tower constructed upon it, as the text box explains in mathematical terms (See ‘Solving the Tower of Hanoi through recursion’ on the third page). The Tower of Hanoi can be solved using recursion too, which helps mathematicians find the way to solve the puzzle in the fewest number of steps possible. You then repeat this process, dividing the pile into two twenties, two tens, and so on, until you narrow it down to the one coin. You can select the lighter pile and discard the other forty coins all at once. A faster way would be to divide the pile into two piles of forty and weigh these two piles against one another. To find this lighter coin, one solution would be to weigh and compare two coins at a time to see if there is any difference in weight – but this method would take ages. All the coins weigh the same, apart from one that weighs slightly less. For instance, imagine you have eighty coins and a set of balance scales. “Recursion is the extremely useful idea of solving a large problem by reducing it to smaller instances of the same problem,” says Dan. Professor Dan Romik, of the University of California, Davis, has investigated the Tower of Hanoi and, despite the puzzle’s apparent simplicity, has shown that it continues to yield new surprises. However, underlying the puzzle are some key mathematical ideas – even if we might not appreciate them when solving it. This puzzle quickly reached fame as the brainteaser now known as the Tower of Hanoi.ĭespite it seeming initially perplexing, in truth the Tower of Hanoi is a problem that even amateur puzzlers can solve with a bit of lateral thinking. However, the catch is, a larger disc can never sit on top of a smaller disc. The aim is to move the tower, one disc at a time, over to the right-hand pole. HANOI TOWERS CODEWARS SERIESThere are three poles in a row, the one on the left containing a series of discs of decreasing size, with the other two, empty. In 1883, a French mathematician named Édouard Lucas came up with an intriguing scenario. |
